INN (Идентификационный номер налогоплательщика) is the Russian tax identification number, issued as 10 digits to organisations or 12 digits to individuals. Both lengths carry a Federal Tax Service (FTS) weighted checksum — organisations get one check digit, individuals get two chained check digits.

How does the validator know if it's an organisation or individual INN?
By length alone — 10 digits means organisation, 12 digits means individual. Each length has its own distinct checksum formula, which the validator applies automatically.
Why does the individual (12-digit) INN check two digits instead of one?
The Federal Tax Service's algorithm computes the 11th digit from the first 10 digits, then computes the 12th digit from the first 11 (including that just-computed 11th digit). Both must match for the number to be valid — a single wrong digit anywhere breaks the chain.
Can this tool confirm an INN is currently registered and active?
No. This is a mathematical checksum check only. Confirming an INN is actually registered requires access to the Federal Tax Service's own systems, which this site cannot query.
