What's the difference between PIS, PASEP, NIS, and NIT?
They're the same 11-digit number and checksum, just named differently depending on the issuing context: PIS for private-sector workers, PASEP for public servants, NIS for CadÚnico social programs, and NIT for INSS self-employed contributors.
Is this a real PIS/PASEP number?
No. The 10-digit base is randomly generated and the check digit is computed to satisfy the checksum, so the result is not assigned to any real worker.
How is the check digit computed?
Multiply the first 10 digits by the fixed weights 3, 2, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2, sum the results, and take the sum mod 11. If that remainder is 0 or 1, the check digit is 0; otherwise it's 11 minus the remainder.
